It seems in Mamma Mia that everything is based around fitting to songs, so why is Rosie a cookery writer?

That's just a nice colorful detail. There's really no need for her to write about food or write at all for that matter, the story just calls for her to be an independent woman with a wild side. I guess since writers are typically viewed as independent the career just suits the character.
